Top shop coming to America

Topshop: Coming to AmericaAt the risk of sounding like an old fogey (I was born in the '70s after all--ha ha), sometimes I get nostalgic for how much bigger the world used to seem. When I was growing up, I used to look forward to the Toblerone chocolate bars my dad would bring home from his business trips to foreign countries that sold duty free Swiss candy. And holidays to visit my Granny and Grandaddy overseas meant exotic stuff like Kinder Eggs (the European version of the Happy Meal, little chocolate eggs with toys inside) and Boots pharmacy products. Flash forward to 2008: The chocolate is sold at my local supermarkets and delis, and Boots stuff is available at Target. The world is, simply, like the Disney ride threatened us, a "small" one. This definitely applies to fashion. All the Euro brands seem to be available in the U.S. and they have Banana Republic in London. It's confusing, right? The latest news is that Topshop is coming to America too. I will have more details on this tomorrow after I attend the super top-secret (get it? Haha) press preview tonight. In one of my former gigs at another magazine, I used to look forward to London fashion week, where I was sent once or twice a year to cover the trends, not least of all for the crazy Top Shop sprees I would always squeeze in, returning home with tons of trendy stuff (leggings, before they even hit here; same with skinny jeans) that no one in New York was wearing yet. It was easy to get a jumpstart on the latest Kate Moss-inspired look.
